EPC and What it Means for Affiliate Program Members

EPC is one of the many acronyms you’ll come across as an affiliate program member. But what many affiliates don’t realise is that it’s actually one of the most useful measurements for understanding how well an offer you’re promoting is performing. So, if you’re new to working with affiliate programs or just confused by all the endless acronyms flying around, let’s take a look at what EPC actually means, and why you should pay attention to it.

What does EPC mean?

EPC stands for earnings per click. In other words, it tells you how much money you’re going to earn for each click they generate through their affiliate links.

The basic calculation is: EPC = Total affiliate earnings ÷ Total clicks

So, if your affiliate links generate £500 from 1,000 clicks, your EPC would be £0.50.

EPC is particularly useful because it connects your traffic directly to your earnings. Instead of simply looking at how many visitors or clicks you receive, you can start to understand how valuable that traffic actually is.

Why is EPC important?

Dating traffic is only useful if it has the potential to earn you money. You could have thousands of visitors clicking your affiliate links, but if very few of them convert, your earnings may still be disappointing. EPC helps you see this more clearly.

It can also help you compare different affiliate offers. If two offers receive a similar amount of traffic but one consistently produces a higher EPC, it may be the more profitable option. However, EPC should never be viewed in isolation. Your traffic source, audience, conversion rate, commission structure and the type of offer you are promoting can all affect the result.

How can you use EPC?

One of the simplest ways to use EPC is to compare your campaigns and affiliate offers. Imagine you promote two different dating offers. Offer A generates an EPC of £0.20, while Offer B generates an EPC of £0.60. If the traffic quality and other conditions are similar, Offer B could potentially produce three times as much revenue from the same number of clicks. Knowing that can help you decide where to focus your efforts.

You can also monitor EPC over time. If it starts falling, it’s usually a sign that you need to do something different. Whether that’s changing your targeting tactics, choosing a new traffic source, or looking for a new internet marketing affiliate program to work with.

Does a higher EPC always mean better?

Not necessarily. A high EPC can be a good thing. But it depends on how it’s calculated and what’s behind the number. So, an offer might have a great EPC because the affiliate partnership program pays a high commission. But it also might be that the offer has a lower EPC but attracts a far wider customer base, so you get a lot more clicks and conversions. It is also important to remember that EPC is an average. Your individual results can be higher or lower depending on the traffic you send and how well that audience matches the offer.

How can you improve your EPC?

Improving EPC usually starts with improving the quality and relevance of your traffic. So, if you’re trying to attract dating traffic, you need to make sure that your content is getting in front of people who are already genuinely interested not just in dating, but in the dating niche that you’re promoting. Your landing pages should also be clear, relevant, and easy to understand.

Split testing can be useful for this, helping you experiment with different headlines, calls to action, landing pages, and offers, to see what actually works for your audience. But to make the most of that, you also need to track your results. Because the more you know about your audience, the easier it becomes to tailor your content to attract their attention. EPC is relatively simple to understand, but it can be invaluable, if used properly. So, rather than simply focusing on getting more clicks, use EPC find out how valuable those clicks are. That way, you can build a more effective and profitable affiliate marketing strategy.
